Verify your email settings are correct

Verify that your email settings are correct by following the steps below.

There are many different email clients out there, so the steps below may or may not be exactly the steps you need to take. Refer to your email client’s Help menu for more specific instructions.

In Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and earlier versions of Outlook:

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click to select E-mail Accounts.
  3. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, click to select the View or change existing e-mail accounts option, and then click Next.
  4. Select your Barral Institute email account and click Change.
  5. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, confirm all your settings are correct and then click on More Settings.
  6. In the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box, click on the Outgoing Server tab and confirm that there is a check in the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. Also make sure the radio button is selected next to Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
  7. Click the OK button. Then click the Next > button. And finally, click the Finish button.

Email worked before and now it does not

If you answer “No” to all the questions below, then there might be a problem with the Barral Institute email server. In most cases the problem will be fixed very soon.

You may still be able to use a web-based version of your inbox by logging into the following page:
http://webmail.barralinstitute.com

  • Are you trying to check your email from a hotel, airport, cafe, etc?
  • Have you made any changes recently to your email settings?
  • Have you recently installed any anti-virus or firewall software?
  • Have you tried using a different SMTP port by changing your settings?
  • Can you access webmail via the link above?

If you answered “No” to all the above questions, please contact Barral Institute.

Access email from a hotel, airport, cafe, etc

Some public networks block certain types of communication on their network. For instance, you may be in a hotel or airport that does not allow any communication on port 25 (the default SMTP port).

You have a few options that you can try.

  • You could try to change the SMTP port from 25 to 587.
  • Or you can just use the webmail to access your inbox.

  7. In the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box, click on the Advanced tab and change the Outgoing server (SMTP) port from 25 to 587.
  8. Click the OK button. Then click the Next > button. And finally, click the Finish button.
  9. Test your email by clicking Send/Receive. If there are no errors, you are connected. If you still have errors, go back to the steps above and change your port back from 587 to 25. You will need to use webmail to access your email.

I Can’t Get Email
