The Viscero-Somatic Link: Learn how Visceral Manipulation can Alleviate Musculoskeletal Pain and Dysfunction
Course Length: 2 Days
Synopsis: According to Jean-Pierre Barral 90% of musculoskeletal complaints have a visceral component. You will discover these underlying viscero-somatic components to pain and dysfunction, and learn simple and effective evaluation and treatment skills for the abdomen. These evaluation and treatment techniques are easily integrated into any type of manual therapy practice. And your clients will be amazed by these viscero-somatic connections.
Course Highlights Include:
- Explore why muscle spasms and adaptive shortening of the psoas and quadratus lumborum can be caused by the viscera anterior to these muscles.
- Discover how each organ relates to a spinal segment and how this creates a viscero-somatic feedback loop.
- Learn how Thoracic Inlet conditions can be caused by visceral problems.
- Explore relationships between the viscera and the hard frame. Understand, for example, why forward flexion limitations can be caused when the liver cannot slide vis a vis the diaphragm,
- Discover the role of the liver in right shoulder problems and the gall bladder for cervical pain.
- Explore the viscera’s mind-body connection, and the calming effect that can be facilitated through Visceral Manipulation.
- The instructor will provide the appropriate anatomy, physiology, lecture and demonstration that address applications for back pain, shoulder dysfunction, range of motion restrictions, headaches and for common post-surgical treatment considerations.
Prerequisite: None

New techniques are important to learn, however the most crucial part of the therapy session is the evaluation phase, as that determines what needs to be treated and in what order. This course will teach you invaluable evaluation methods that will enhance your ability to determine the primary causes of the client's pain, along with the Visceral Manipulation techniques that will substantially increase the effectiveness of your patient treatments.
